About

The Ford Windstar was minivan aimed at families. At launch it had a 155hp 3.8-liter V6 engine that drove the front wheels through a four-speed automatic gearbox. However, in 1995, a new 150hp 3.0-liter engine was introduced, and the 3.8 was increased to 200hp. The big drawback on this shape of Windstar was the absence of a driver’s side rear door, but this was remedied with the second-generation Windstar that appeared in 1998. It was bigger and more practical for families, and it also proved robust. It gained a great deal of luxury equipment, and lost the 3,.0-liter engine, leaving the 3.8 as the sole choice. The Windstar name was killed off in 2003, although the vehicle continued (albeit with a facelift) as the Freestar from then until 2007. At Haynes, we have an extensive range of Ford repair manuals and online maintenance procedures available for professional mechanics and DIY car enthusiasts. Our Ford Windstar/Ford Freestar repair manual is here to help you through every stage of servicing or fixing your car.

Ford Windstar is a Ford minivan manufactured in Canada since 1994 and replacing the Ford Aerostar.

The cabin has three rows of seats for six passengers and a driver. The configuration of the seats is changeable, and sliding doors are made on both sides. The second row of seats can be moved across the cabin, while opening, the passage to the third row on the right or left side. The limited view in the car, along with the large dimensions of the car, Ford engineers compensated for a large glass area and a distance sensor with a sound signal.

  • Windstar is the first minivan, on which not only frontal, but also side airbags are installed, which protect against side impacts of the head and chest cells sitting in front.
  • The engine of the car, fully complies with the standard LEV, with a certain refinement of the same meets the standard ULEV. At the same time, the power unit still produces 200 hp, which is the best indicator among minivans.
  • As an option, an electric sliding door with remote control is offered.
  • The front and rear passengers can use the audio system in the car in different ways, for example, the front one can use the radio tape recorder, and the rear CD player, through headphones.

Ford Windstar

Starting from the 2004 model year, Ford decided that all the names of passenger models should begin with the letter “F”, the updated Windstar minivan turned into a Freestar, slightly restyled and with improved handling, and Ford Freestar received more expensive materials in the cabin, airbags for all three rows of seats and a new suspension, which has become more rigid, which will prevent turning over. The design of the instrument panel has changed, and the ability to fold the seats to a flat state.

At first, customers were offered two V6 engines: a volume of 3.0 liters. with a power of 152 hp and 206-horsepower 3.6 l., who worked with a 4-speed automatic transmission. The first motor, despite the lower power, allowed a maximum speed of 180 km / h. The speed limit developed by the second unit is electronically limited to 175 km / h. Since 2003, the engine is now only one – the volume of 3.8 liters. V6, power 203 hp, and torque 325 N • m.

Ford Windstar was also equipped with a rear semi-independent suspension, with pneumatic elements of variable stiffness. Front disc brakes, rear drum, installed ABS. The Windstar comes standard with air conditioning, an electronic compass, an audio system, and for a separate payment, the interior is trimmed with leather.

From the 2003 model year, all modifications of Windstar are completed with body-colored bumpers, exterior mirrors of aerodynamic shape, and, on request, with the company’s anti-skid system AdvanceTrac, new built-in child seats (LATCH system).
